Survival tips
>Don't run cars during or after ashfall, if you do run an engine during the ash-storm it will destroy intake sensors, and effectively sand-blast your engine to death.
It could take months for ash to settle, and longer for it to get washed away.
If you need to run a gas generator, your best hopes would be a 2 stroke, guarded with a high CFM oiled air filter.
Getting oiled car engine filters is harder, but possible, and then they would need to be cleaned FREQUENTLY, on the order of tens of miles to prevent engine damage. Even then modern EFI cars aren't made with wet/oiled filters in mind, which means your MAF is at risk still. But at least you are more protected from the ash.

Also, Oiled filters are less efficient at filtering SMALLER particles, but are more efficient at filtering out the size range that volcanic ash is. They will also provide higher flow and longer service life, which is critical in a ash laden atmosphere.
