I took an Arabic class last year in uni. It was actually pretty interesting, only like 10 people were in the class and there were like 10 Arabs kids that hung out. Tbqh they seemed really nice and helpful, there was one super qt girl who didn't even wear a hijab. Feel kind of bad for hating Islam when I think about them, I wonder what they would say if I went off about "the religion of peace" to them.

That girl may have been either a Christian Arab or some minority denomination of Islam. Non-Sunnis tend to be much more secular and assimilated in Western societies because they may experience discrimination in their home societies. But yeah, about the distinction between Islam and individual Muslims, it's just like how occasionally you'll meet polite and decent black people; you know black people are disproportionately responsible for violent crime in our cities, but individually you don't necessarily have to hold them responsible. Muslims probably have some perceptions about Americans being responsible for warcrimes and stuff but may feel capable of having friendships with Americans.
I encourage you to keep studying Arabic. I have been for about 5 years and it's very useful and fun. You'll find that it's very logical and its rules are very consistent, so once you get your foot in the door it gets easier (even though it is considered one of the hardest languages).
