Hallucinogens basically lower the filter of incoming information, particularly in the dense serotonergic occipital region where most hallucinogens bind to. The thing is, the filter is there for a reason. It was evolutionarily beneficial. Your brain filters out irrelevancies so it can perform complicated tasks easier.
In nature, hallucinogens were probably designed in plants and fungi as a type of deterrent to keep animals from eating them.
