I live in New England and I'm pretty sure that's a lie. Majority of people around here are white, and we would never admit how racist we are, even though if any idiot looks at a racial distribution map, we are pretty much the whitest part of the country.

I was forced to learn British English at school (must have been 15 years ago, maybe more), but I always preferred American English.
One of the main reasons for this is that American culture is everywhere. It's so easy to pick up on not only the language itself, but untranslatable jokes and internal lingo. Playing games, watching movies and listening to music helps as well.
In short; American English is superior. I also enjoy American culture more (being a gun guy myself).
I can't stand creeping Americanism. Ive been on /fit/ so long I found myself even referring to Porridge as "Oatmeal". Fucking hell.
Some proper spellings have been lost entirely to Americanism.
Spell Gaol correctly and amerilards are lost without their simplified spelling.

The school system here teaches British, but kids pick up American from the media. What happens is that people speak this mixture of British-American, e.g. one day they write "honour" and the next day they write "honor" etc.

The Deep South actually has a mostly English heritage but it's also the most common area where people just say they are "American".
