A Japanese technology demonstrator making its first flight, the production variant (Mitsubishi F-3A) will be bigger and more capable.

why are they shitting their pants?

what's special about this plane?

The only thing they really need to be worrying about is losing a portion of a market share. Japan is more definitely capable of making a jet to the level of the F-22, but it will not be revolutionary or game changing.

>one of our closest allies is making a jet that could eventually rival the F-22
how is this anything but a good thing
>>
What are the differences between the variants? Different purposes or just different prototypes?
>>
>>71743840
Nothing it is amazing. I was speaking about Lockheed Martin. They lose one less customer. Militarily this is important, as the USA doesn't need to worry about Japan in a situation of War if it can't produce enough jets for them, now they are self sufficient. If only the rest of us in NATO can do this.

I'd imagine the jet would be comparable to the F-22, but only 15 years later. It will likely have similar capabilities to the Raptor, but judging by the use of 3D thrust vectoring, it would seem like they want better maneuverability. Not that it really matters, the F-22 is already ridiculously maneuverable.

It is quite impressive to say the least. America has already separated itself from it's competitors, and we will likely never catch you unless you collapse. Canada once had the ability to catch or even surpass you once with the Avro Arrow, but that fell a part, and destroyed our aerospace sector. They then moved to NASA and we all know what happens next. Canada is basically the kid with all the potential but instead goes to smoke weed in the back alley.

Basically.

However, it is somewhat advantageous to buy from the US. Massive production runs allow top end aircraft to be cheaper than those produced in smaller quantities. Take the Eurofighter and the F-15E. The Eurofighter costs 90 million Pounds, while the flyaway for a F-15 in '98 was $31.1 mil. I know, that was 18 years ago, but inflation hasn't gone up that much.
