Mythbusters did a whole episode on underwater stuff and this was covered. After the first few seconds it becomes near impossible to open the car door. The car needs to be fully submerged before it's even able to be opened again.
The absolute best way to survive is to break the window. However, this requires a special glass breaking tool because of how tempered glass is designed.
Given that it was dark and these criminals didn't have their headlights on, it would have been a lot harder to find the car. It would then be hard to even figure out what to do.
