How's living in Sweden as an American ?
I am going to university in southern Sweden and will be staying around Lund, I have never been there but I'd like to get a good grasp of what to expect.

Lund has one of the if not the best public transportation in Sweden, which for the record is really fucking good. You wont need a car here if you are just gonna study, there are over 400 busstops in a city with 80k people. We got a train station too. Lund is aslo the big bike city of Sweden, so get one of those

Expensive as all hell. You know Sweden has been importing people without control for at least the past 20 years or so? This combined with a semi-socialist, highly regulated housing market has led to a massive housing shortage. We're literally full. You'll either have to cough up a huge sum of money to buy an apartment or find someone who sublets. Lund's student housing firm also has a thing where there's essentially a lottery for new students for the year, giving them a random queue number for a number of "new student" apartments or dorm rooms.

Living in Lund right now as a student, though I am Swedish. 1000 dolares should be alright per month. Getting a car might be a bit troublesome but there is a relatively good train and bus network for this entire part of Sweden and in the city itself everybody bikes a lot. There is a housing problem in general in Sweden that is correct, however if you are going to be studying in Lund University you will be able to apply for living in student corridors/apartments which is easier. If you are a bit unlucky you might need to spend your first couple of months by renting a room from some private person in the city however, but Iots of people do that and it is mostly fine if not ideal.
Rapefugees are not very common in Lund. It is an university city and almost 40% of the population is made up of students. Don't go to the neighbouring larger city of Malmö during the night though, unless you're going with friends.

Also if you want to just buy an apartment that is of course also possible. It just depends on how much you are willing to pay. Property prices in Sweden in general are relatively high, due to the housing problems mentioned by other posters.
