Universities allow in some questionable people in order to have a successful program which relates to money contributions. For instance, the 10 teams in the Big 12 conference receive yearly contributuons to their athletic programs from TV contracts between the Big 12 and Fox. These pay outs equal to $22M-$25M per year. The SEC and Big 10 schools are even more.

There aren't any clubs for football (or basketball). Baseball players do typically go to "clubs" (the minor leagues). The reasoning for this is because professional football players are so far advanced physically, they'd literally hurt the kids who think they can play in the Pros out the gate. Because of this, they made the rule you have to be 3 years removed from high school to enter pro league... And even then tons of kids aren't ready and end up getting squashed.
The truth in this argument that people conveniently avoid is that most of these kids actually do get an education through the sports that they wouldn't normally get. They end up not going pro but getting a half decent job because they were able to attend university.
Athletes make a fuck ton of money for the universities. Regular students don't - in fact, they can make the universities lose money so they charge them giant amounts of cash for tuition. It isn't that hard to figure out.
