Just listened to a podcast from The Economist talking about the rise of single women, read: economically independent women. Basically single women are more likely to vote for the state to fund their necessities, that a husband would have provided, while spending their money on consumerist goods.
So the "rise of single women" is women voting for men's money, through the government, without offering anything in exchange (sex, family, children). This is seen as a good thing as men save, invest, and plan for larger purchases while women impulse buy in the retail market, driving the "economy" [read: supporting sweatshops abroad].
Don't forget that manual labor, jobs for less intelligent men, are demonized and replaced with illegal immigrants while jobs for less intelligent women, do-nothing office paper pusher jobs or faux "tech" jobs, are on the rise through VC & government contract spending.
