Idleness, poverty, a weak will, and an inflated sense of self. It is the pseudo-intellectual with little money and no moral basis for reasoning that can see the world in such a simple way. As if there is no earning, and happiness is an abundant commodity that can be stolen from some and given to many.
Needless to say these people are typically devoid of real happiness themselves. They find kinship with their socially malformed peers which then continues the cycle of weakness. There is no breaking it once a sense of belonging if found in the idleness that is the communist's existence. Those who can find gratification on sale for cheap will keep going to the same place over and over again.
It's sad, but really these people are by necessity emotionally children. They simply need to be deflected.

Most communists I've come across take pride in being educated and possessing intellect, yet they have no clue how to use it. My Dad, who never got a degree, was making 7 figures before he retired because he had good work ethic and was a skilled trader. Former commie here. The reality is that it plays on hippy values of communal teamwork and respect. It also allows poor people who feel jilted at their current plight to have someone to blame it on. I was the latter. I grew up dirt poor and worked my ass off. When I went to college, the trust fund kiddies pissed me off worse than the niggers I had to stand at the bus stop with in grade school. It took some growing up to realize that this was just envy.
Coupled with the idea of wanting equality for everyone and vindiction against the rich, college leads you to believe that because it is a state institution, state control of all things would be better. The imagery of the USSR is played up, and you're led to believe it was the economy that created that imagery, opposed to Russian culture.
Essentially, it appeals to people who want to be a good person, but have not come to terms with the fact that they actually despise 90% of the people around them. And it's becoming a harder to break from the thought process. I did, but the circumstances in which I did are not available to those who have been brainwashed.
