But in the UK we were taught about the Titanic in primary school even in the very early 80's can even remember painting pictures of Titanic in school for a childrens art exhibition, being shown A Night To Remember in primary school, can also remember going to a Titanic/White Star/Cunard exhibition with my parents around 1984, even had Cunard/White Star posters as a kid too, though I do come from the city where Titanics home port was and Cunard/White Star were based so it was pretty well known here, even before it was rediscovered

Because the titanic was a ship claimed to be unsinkable which sank because of easily avoided human error, and the driving force behind the error was pride. Couple that with the tragedy being compounded by radio and flare distress calls going unanswered and lack of lifeboats all due to, again, pride, and it all neatly fits together as an allegory for human hubris.
People also like to romanticize and analyze things like husbands kissing their wives goodbye for the final time, the captain going down with the ship, the band playing on, the rich not realizing what was happening until it was too late and the lifeboats going half full, the distinctions between the boarding classes which mirrored classes in society at large, and the apathy of most of the survivors in the lifeboats.
Not only was this during peacetime, and so not overshadowed by the millions upon millions of other deaths in the Great War, but there were enough survivors left to tell all of the above.
For the other there's no story or lesson, except maybe that everyone dies no matter what and there is no real reason or meaning to the death. And nobody wants to hear that story.

Reason why was because the Titanic was dubbed to be unsinkable, so when you sink on your madden voyage, it's going to turn heads. Also the other big thing was it took until the 1980s to actually find the wreckage and the truth of what caused it to sink. (Before then everyone assumed there was a giant gash that ripped through the ship.)
