As far as home defense goes shoot what you're comfortable with and what fits your price range. I'd suggest going to your local fun range and renting what they have on offer. An AR-15 is also a very good option for HD use.
I'm saving up for an FNX .45 Tacticool because I like pretending that I'm an operator operating in operational areas, but if you want to skip the hefty price tag there are any number of handguns that will fill the HD role without a hitch.

Springfield XDs are kind of low tier. Glock and S&W would be my choices. Glock being the best choice of the polymers over all for the price and what you get.
As far as a home defense gun I agree .45 is really nice assuming the person using it can shoot it properly. I prefer rifles for HD. ARs are great for this, lots of ammo and you can get ammo that does not penetrate walls very well also.
I've found a good way to fit this up my ass for when I go walking around in London. Hopefully it'll scare the niggers away long enough for the police's anti social behavior squads to arrive.

I had an XDS in .45 it was an alright pistol nice and concealable but it was one that had to be recalled. I have not had much liking for them since. I never had problems with it, but it made me worry about it to much. It's not a gun I would recommend over the Glock or S&W. Though on a tighter budget they are pretty damn good for the price, better than a high-point ghetto blaster by a long shot and not to much more expensive.
