I'm not going to lie and say he saved Italy because that is a lie but he did some very good things for his country like try and make more farmland available for Italians when the country was at the time still reliant on farming to make a living, he was able to unite the many political groups of his country against real (and perceived) threats ranging from the entente to the third Reich and world wide communist revolution, he well knew that Italy was not going to be the premier power of the world but he tried to make the country strong enough domestically and internationally so Italy would not be bullied into doing other countries bidding like it had been doing for since the fall of the roman empire. and this meme of Italians cant fight is in part his fault he did not prepare for massive because he saw mostly small wars with quick and decisive battles like in his involvement in Ethiopia, Albania, the bombing of Corfu, and the Spanish civil war plus it was his military cabinet that was also resistant to changes the head of the navy thought aircraft carriers were memes and who could blame him before the pacific and Atlantic wars everyone believed it would be large battleships that would carry the day.
in short a descent enough person to keep the people happy, run his nation in a stable fashion that from what i read did not have a very stable government since unification, and was able to get a few military victories to further his goals but he was dragged into something he had no idea was coming and i say with an army using 30 year old obsolete equipment and lead by retards they managed to do fine if the stars aligned in their favor.
