Honestly OP all of the Balkans are great. Forget the ethnic tensions for a second, the region is pretty much Rocky Mountains by the Adriatic. Go there, I recommend you visit Belgrade, Skopje, Tirana. Enjoy the local cuisine, hang out with some interesting locals, drink rakia and eat some baklava. Then buy or rent a bike and traverse the countryside, see beautiful landscapes. There's a place I've been to in Albania where the beach was right next to a snow-capped mountain.
If scenery isn't your thing, explore some famous architecture, well the ones that we didn't bomb or burn down yet (heh)

I am a Romanian studying in the UK (pls no bully). I have visited Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia, and I'll give you an overview.

Slightly poorer than Romania. The buildings are nice in the North, but the roads from the Romanian border on the coast are shit. Don't drive through Bulgaria after 10 pm, a friend got his car stolen by two Bulgarians pretending to be police officers.
>Serbia
Great fucking country. I was in Belgrade, and I went to beerfest. The people were so chill, and when these qts heard I was Romanian they started talking about our friendship and all that. It was pretty good and they had good beer. Also slightly poorer than Romania, Belgrade blocks look dodgy but countryside looks like Sicillian movies. Great food for great price.
>Bosnia and Herzegovina
They all looked depressed, no cars on the road, nothing. They didn't accept Serbian money for petrol when we were close to Serbian border. Buildings still had bullet marks on them from the war. They did have a good looking river, but that's about it.
>Croatia
The richest out of all of them, but the people seemed pretty shitty in Dubrovnik. The food was great, beaches really nice and not many dindus on a pretty popular beach. I have a poster from there about the Yugoslav wars.
