The major reason is Thatcherism, it fucked the North of England and Scotland especially hard, though none of the UK got off free
The reason socialism fucked us because socialist policies (NHS, Welfare state) made our taxes higher for everything which discouraged industrial growth after Thatcher bulldozed everything, even after she left office.
Although I do agree after Thatcher we needed a welfare state to support people the amount that was being given out could probably have been cut down in order to put more money into encouraging economic growth in the private sector
