Two, we leave the EU, get our 10 billion a year back, maybe we get slightly better trade deals with non-EU countries, maybe we don't, maybe we solve our demographic problem, maybe we don't, but regardless of whether we enter a new golden age, just plod along or collapse, we end up sitting, watching across our 13km moat and hope and pray that EU collapses, because if it doesn't, and it achieves it's end goal of federalisation, we'll be sitting next door to a superpower and we'll basically be left with the choice of deciding whether we want to be the bitch of the EU or the USA.
History shows that there's no right choice when choosing a direction in international politics, there's just the least shitty direction and that people who tell you a golden age will dawn if you simply support them are always liars and demagogues.

The British Armed Forces are no longer capable of large-scale independant force projection, it's been an open 'secret' since the 2000's that we'll never be going to war again except as part of a coalition.
It's basically a choice of either NATO or the EU army now and various European powers have been pulling away from NATO (see our defence spending commitment) since the USA has been weakening on the world stage.
An 'EU army' wouldn't really be a massive change from the last couple of US-led coalitions really, it'd just mean fighting alongside French, German or Polish troops instead of Americans, so at least we'd sustain fewer 'friendly fire' casualties.

Ending the nation-state is a long term goal. Everything along the way is a negotiation process where you try to find out which idea will sell so you can get it done.
Mutual defense pacts have been going on since before Europe was even called Europe. Both "great wars" were instigated on the promise that a war so horrible would finally cause the psychological conditions to accept global peace utopia as the solution. Neither time did it work.
So what do you do? There's nothing stopping actual allies with mutual self-interest from collaborating. But you have to be ready to stand on your own if the other guy breaks the deal, or even if you just mutually decide the agreement is worth both walking away from.
