Because Republicans don't actually possess any recognizable party platform anymore. Their entire identity revolves around jingoism and American exceptionalism. They think the military is great because it's made up of "regular folks" fighting for their country, which they've been taught and instructed to be proud of at the expense of all logic. They don't see that it's just another branch of the government, and they don't care, because it doesn't fit their narrative to think otherwise.

It makes no sense. The military is the biggest socialist program in the USA far and away, with a huge part of the economy being controlled by the bloated and inefficient government bureaucrats. They waste billions (trillions over time) on things like $500 hammers.
Yet, Republicans love this pork and this government control over the economy. More more more.
It goes back to the fact that Republicans are not libertarian. They are authoritarian conservatives, who want a big government, they just want that big government to do something different than the big government that Democrats create.
Of course the Democrats support big military too, especially Hillary. So hey it's all fucked.
