What I am getting at is that the idea of the spiritual universalism where man is saved from the Devil by accepting Christ has turned into material universalism, where the Devil is now the bourgeoisie or white people or whatever it is, and once free of their corrupting and oppressive influence, we'll all be happy forever. They have a pretty strong conformist-authoritarian streak in their culture, at least dating back to the time of Confucius. I think they value order and material affluence more than anything. I think you're right to a certain extent. I think we're likely to see the demise of the Communist Party and its replacement by some kind of military technocracy in the not too distant future, and then a liberalization of the culture, but minus full fledged inalienable rights and democracy. I think that will solve the 'fear of revolution' problem. My guess is that we'll see a sort of 19th century 'enlightened despotism', with liberal policies allowed as far as they don't threaten the establishment.
I'm imagining what Japan would be like if they weren't subject to American occupation, and basing my vision of China on that. Its very speculative, but fun to think about.

This is 100% right. I'm working here and have many Chinese friends. For the most part, they admire our seemingly affluent lifestyles and our relaxed attitude towards marriage, jobs, family etc. Thankfully the importance of family and the in-group culture is so strong, otherwise their would be even more desperate to escape. From the people I've befriended, most think it would be great to live in the West but couldn't imagine not being close to family, friends, and food.
