I discovered Spencer through The Daily Shoah. He seems a lot more academic than most of the alt-right, and has inspired me to attend the next NPI conference as I want to get more involved instead of lurking on (mostly)anonymous message boards accomplishing nothing.

I don't think he's much of an intellectual. Name dropping obscure philosophers and politicians doesn't come off as very intelligent. He's similar to Jonathan Bowden in the sense that both sound smart to people who aren't familiar with what they are talking about. All political movements need intellectuals of some kind. They give the movement a cause for being that extends beyond solving immediate issues or concerns.
If you look at Nationalist politics, particularly the movements that have come up from the working-class, they have all fallen over eventually, the decline and fall of the British National Party and the English Defence League are two excellent examples, as well as a plethora of Nationalist minded soccer clubs (hooligans) across the European continent.
They had no backbone to hold up the movement and take it somewhere, and no brain to direct it.
Look at the succesful ones like the Front National, Swedish Democrats, Dutch Freedom Party, Austrian Freedom Party, Lega Nord and the Danish People's party, they all have an intellectual core, rather than an expression of working-class people who do street rallies and try (but fail) in political parties. Even UKIP which started out as a party of Academics and Businesspeople who were against the Maastricht Treaty in the early 1990's have gone on to great success and influence. Not to say working-class people aren't values, winning them from their traditional party loyalties is of course the key to success for a Nationalist political movement. The working-class can never do it alone.

Wew, lad. Wilders has quiet support from a % of highly educated people, sure. But there are no think tanks propping the party up. There are no intellectuals going on TV defending their stances. There are no student organizations devoted to their cause. No newspapers. Media. No fund raisers for the party among wealthy professional. Nothing.
Wilders himself is certainly a veteran parliamentarian but he's no erudite. He gets his votes due to verbal (and physical) courage which mostly makes him a hero among the lower to middle classes, but coming out as a PVV-supporter (especially as a highly educated person) is still social if not professional suicide. The intellectual backbone of his party is a former radio network owner turned autodidact, who has written a few books about the general decline of the west and stuff, but that's it.
He had a distinguished Arabist join his party, but sadly he died a year ago.
