For what it's worth, I'm going off memory myself. I had occasion to look up TS Elliot's life many years ago, and his public renunciation of American citizenship triggered a backlash in WW1 era America. I don't doubt the laws have been updated since then.
I also remember hearing a story on NPR some time ago of some leftist fuckwit who was so angry at George W. Bush that he moved to France and renounced his American citizenship.
