I'm O- and CMV negative so I donate as often as possible. If you don't know O- is the universal donor. CMV is a virus that you can get and you would probably never know. The catch is it leaves antibodies in your blood which if donated to an infant can kill them. The phlebotomists told me that because I'm both O- and CMV negative they use special bags for my blood which then gets mixed with other things and can be given to three infants. After they told me this I felt obligated to donate often.
My first donation wasn't uneventful but the second time I donated when they poked me with the needle my blood spurted out onto the phlebotomists glove and I immediately started to black out. Wasn't so much fun. Overall I have a habit of starting to black out if I sit up while donating so I just donate lying down. One time I was deferred for having low blood pressure so I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

The Red Cross sells blood to hospitals, they don't give it away. I really don't know how much profit they make off it but I don't think it's that much. As mentioned before the bags, tubes, testing, snacks, etc aren't free. And you can't pay people in the United States for products that will be transfused into humans because it encourages lying about your history. I agree the Red Cross is shitty with their business practice but honestly they can't give it away for free or they wouldn't be able to afford to collect it.

Armed Services Blood Program. I think its been around awhile, really took off after 9/11 from what I heard. They're limited to federal property which is why almost no one has heard of them and not every base has a donor center. But all the blood collected stays within the military unless it's sold to another center/hospital.

I donated this past Saturday and I wish I hadn't because for some reason my blood pressure before going in was 170/110. I have never, ever been that high and I didn't do shit in terms of physical activity before donating. I mean high blood pressure runs in my family, but usually I'm around 130/90. And I wasn't even thinking about it until after they told me what it was, so i didn't psyche myself into a false positive.
Now I'm fucking paranoid that I'm going to die of stage 2 hypertension.
