Is hearing loss going to be the next big civilisational diseases?

If you look at the facts, and notice how people live now, I truly believe this is going to be an enormous topic that seemingly comes out of nowhere.

It's not the hearing loss that's the problem, it's the tinnitus. You can adjust to having bad hearing, but self-caused tinnitus routinely makes people suicidal until they habituate (which can take years).

Audiologists are the Cassandras of the modern world. You ever talk to an audiologist? They're usually redpilled as fuck, and they cannot believe the misplaced emphasis people have on their lifestyle.

I've been DJing for almost 15 years. I listen to extremely loud music through headphones every single day. Aside from relatively mild tinnitus (I can sleep easily in a silent room), I haven't noticed any loss in hearing.

Naval engineer here and I know a small number of guys in the field that have lost their jobs due to bad hearing.
It happens to those idiots who think they can walk through an engine room for several minutes without hearing protection. They think no damage is being done because it's not immediate but those inaudible frequencies get you in the end. they eventually fail their biannual medical exam which is a legal requirement for sea-based work.

There's no contradiction there, those often go together. One of the markers of hyperacusis is when you do better than average on a hearing test, but worse than average in a real-life crowded room.

Audiologist here. That statement is full of shit, at least in the US.

80% of us are runoff potential Speech Pathologists which means we were talentless Comm majors.

Guess what that percentage matches to in terms of gender presentation in the field?

Hey audiobro, why is it that my hearing is perfect, but I often have trouble understanding what people are actually saying? It's like everyone else understands what's being said with song lyrics and I can't, and I usually have to ask people to repeat things when everyone else appears to have heard it correctly.
>>
>>71589099
Try a Speech Language Pathologist or something similar to identify whether or not you have a neurological issue.

Audiology is a different focus.
>>
>>71589099

I have this issue.

I think it's related to hearing damage in certain speech frequencies. Though I'm not sure why.
>>

>>
>>71589099

Unlikely chance, but people ejaculate in my field over getting to diagnose people like you with Auditory Processing Disorder.

Because then we get to sell you things that have no real proof of benefit for a disorder that may or may not actually exist and may be more neurological in nature.

I'm in my 30s and I can still hear frequencies up to 16Khz, so I think I'm doing good protecting my hearing.
>>

>next level shit.
>>
>>71587380
Yeah, that's exactly how it works, dumbass.

Everything is fine until it's not.

You're doing so much worse damage with the headphones than if you just listened to loud music without them. Blasting the sound waves directly into your ear holes at point blank range is completely overwhelming to your cilia. You have no idea.

Take the headphones off, never use them.

And earbuds are even worse. The guy who invented them belongs in prison.
>>
>>71589493

Important formants of speech for certain people can fall into a range where you have hearing loss/reduced sensitivity.

Between 3k-4kHz is important for understanding speech in background noise.

Around 6kHz is important for high-frequency consonants. Even if you only miss a little, your brain can ruin the code.

That's all you get without an appointment and some $8000 shitbag Boomer-ruining hearing aids, though.

>>
>>71589099
Sounds neurological, not physical.

I would recommend you try listening to tons and tons of podcasts with different people, different voices, accents, different pitch, tone, speaking style, pacing, syntax, lilt, etc.

Maybe if you expose yourself to as many different kinds of intelligible speech it'll be like weightlifting for your auditory processing? This is pure speculation on my part. Give it a whirl, though. Couldn't hurt, surely.
>>
>>71589958
I probably can't hear up to 16kHz anymore. It's fucking dogged me down to where I don't even want to know how bad it is.

I went to an audiologist once, and I was like, "It's right at 11.5kHz and I can't take it anymore" and he was like, "step into my silent booth" where I had to stop myself from telling him all the ways his shit was all shit, front to back shit, he didn't care about shit, poop in loop shit, right down to, I mean, how are you going to produce any kind of reasonable audio through a fucking industry program that craps out sound through the back of the latest Dell computer's motherboard sound card. No wonder I can't understand it. And here you're putting exclusive expensive bone vibration things on my head and putting me in a sound booth that sounds like a fucking freight train and you try to play it off after why I'm telling you this?

Fuck you, asshole. I used to be able to hear the shape of the room upon entry. Even Sony did studies indicating that 30kHz-100kHz are important to the human ear. Sell your ear-blaster faggot machines to somebody else, you hack.

Sometimes the red pill is right in front of you to grasp and you do nothing.

tinnitus is also caused by varying atmospheric pressure manipulated by HAARP and chemtrails.
>>
>>71590496
It's better than listening to them loud, but still does tremendous damage not due to the volume but due to the proximity of the speaker to your tympanic membrane and the fact that the sound waves are forced to reverberate endlessly inside of your ear canal because your earhole is plugged up by the ear bud.

It's the difference between lighting a firecracker in your open hand, which only stings a little, and lighting a firecracker inside your fist, which could blow your fingers off. Understand? When there's no place for excess energy to escape to, that energy doesn't dissipate, it explodes.
>>
>>71591766
Excellent example.

And that's why speakers at the other end of the room sounds so good. You can hear the room, but also the transients get modified by the room before they reach your fragile ears.

Try listening to music that is so quiet you can't quite hear every note, but you can still make out the melody.

Many people seem to want to blast the music as loud as they can so they can hear every last reverberation of every note.

Try working your way up from the opposite end of the spectrum. Start very quiet and then gradually, gradually turn it up until you can hear it just a little bit better.

If you do this, you'll reach a point in volume where you can hear everything fine even though it's not as loud as you're used to. There is a point of diminishing returns with volume.

I still like to listen to loud music from time to time, I have to blast Metallica in my car VERY loud in order to navigate Denver traffic. But I give my ears lots and lots of time to rest in between.

Somebody said they use headphones 45 minutes a week, that's smart to give your ears that time to rest and recover. Your ears are miraculous, they DO heal, they DO repair damage. But it takes time, days of rest in between periods of exertion.

If you go too long without giving your ears rest, then they get damaged so bad that they can't heal.
>>
>>71587119

I've been conscious of this for a while. I run pretty much everything I do on my computer through a speaker now. I use head phones maybe 2-3 times a month and never for more than a few hours. Try this treatment:

Place the palms of your hands over your ears with fingers resting gently on the back of your head. Your middle fingers should point toward one another just above the base of your skull. Place your index fingers on top of you middle fingers and snap them (the index fingers) onto the skull making a loud, drumming noise. Repeat 40-50 times. Some people experience immediate relief with this method. Repeat several times a day for as long as necessary to reduce tinnitus.

Help them anyway, and never stop anyway. Just think of it, what if there were a get-together where you could hear it. What a thing!

Can the people outside hear me? Let's put it to the test. We'll put out some things outside. People outside, can you hear me?

Fight the good fight. Your hearing is important. Protecting yourself is the right way to do things.
Wear your earplugs and safely glasses.

I know you are joking, but why don't you do something about that heavy aluminum being released into our air. GEOENGINEERING is the ultimate soft-kill with symptoms you would not regularly affiliate it with. This is a systematic test system. Do you feel like you have things crawling under your skin sometimes without a rash? YOU HAVE MORGELLONS DISEASE. "They" are really accelerating this process.

nice. i mean i've heard some ambient, but it's usually just odds and ends from bands that don't actually focus on that genre. mostly because i don't have speakers so i can't listen to it in the background

Hearing seems to be an issue for many people I know, it seems prevalent in both young and old. I suspect it is in large part, especially to younger people due to the advent of cheap IPods etc., and that to block out other sounds people tend to exceed the halfway point on the volume bar. What do you guys think?
I'm also particularly interested in smell. I and one mate of mine have damaged noses and can't smell certain things anymore (blunt trauma in Rugby). I sometimes experience a sickly sweet phantom smell too, and my nose randomly bleeds (I think I have pinned what I used to think as 'random' to high stress). On that note though, I know a few people with a lack of smell as well. Seems to be a lot of failing senses, not only the ear.

I got made fun of for using ear protection back when I was a little kid.

They all laughed at me. But then they tried to copy and eventually it was too late.

You're pretty much talking about the first in brain damage. But, you know, get out of that. You'll do it better.

Oh shit I've had this for years, never thought anything of it since my hearing only missed one sound during a test. One day in class I couldn't hear what professor was saying and had her repeat it like six times after I kept raising my voice like an autistic

Some dumbfuck at my job blew a compressed air gun into my ear and now I have tinnitus and nerve damage in my ear. It's not even that bad, most of the time you don't even think about it. After a few weeks you forget it's there.

I always wondered about Twitch streamers and people like that, making a living sitting in front of a computer with fancy headphones on, listening to video game soundtracks and trashy music 8 hours a day, performing the same actions over and over again, only speaking via in-jokes and memes.

They're like canaries in the coal mine. I wonder what happens to them. Are they gonna get dementia at 40?
