Ghana is probably the least poor West-African country. It's no paradise by any means, but it seems like a stable country and it's growing economically.

Most of Ghana used to be British, but the easternmost parts of Ghana used to be part of the German colony of Togoland. Togoland got partitioned after the first world war, with the east half going to the French (and later becoming the country of Togo).
