Challenger explosion. I remember watching it in Kindergarten during class because there was a teacher on the shuttle. It was shown live. I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up. Then it blew up and I didn't want to be an astronaut anymore. Everyone was shocked. The kids were all crying and the teachers could barely control themselves and were having trouble explaining what just happened.

I mean I guess I should remember the assassination attempt on Reagan, but I just don't. Most of my memories from that young are personal, or of movies or tv shows I liked, not major world events.

The challenger was personal though. It was heartbreaking.

I still remember how earthshattering the event was for all Brits. Socialists where dancing in the street and setting fire to effergies of her, whilst the rest of the country could hardly imagine Britain run by anybody else.

at the time since the shuttle program space travel seemed safer than it'd ever been, they were taking up more and more people from different walks of life, for the Challenger like I said they were taking up a teacher.

She's one of those women only other women think is pretty - and they're really just confusing a tiara and sparkly dresses with "good looking".

The current royal, Kate, is like that, too.
She's a 5, a 5.75 on her very best day ever, but women really believe she's good looking.
That would be like men insisting that Matthew Broderick is a great-looking guy.

we can rebuild material shit, you can make it exactly like it was before (minus the defects that caused it to blow up).

Can't just magic a human back to life or even someone exactly like them (well until human cloning becomes a thing)

Also for a 5 year old kid who wants to be an astronaut (not an uncommon dream job for kids growing up in the 70's and 80's), you kind of think more about you being on that shuttle, doing your dream job, taking every precaution you can think of, and still getting vaporized.

Kind of takes that dream away.

also, at that time, Astronauts were considered national heroes. Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, John Glenn, and Sally Ride were household names.

Losing a hero is more of an impact than losing a pile of metal and ceramic.

Yeah Y2K wasn't particularly memorable for me good or bad, I mean, i went to a NYE Rave, candyflipped, and made out with a girl I just met, went to her apartment and fucked her while her ugly sister complained about it, but that wasn't much different from any other weekend in the late 90's and early 2000's.

I just remember Y2K bug worries being a thing and they turned out not to be.

9/11 was the oldest that I was both around for and old enough to have relatively unfettered information access to. I was 11 at the time and while schools were able to do a relatively concerted information suppression at the time, it all came out on the bus and when we got home.

Prior to that I remember vague hints of the Lewinsky scandal filtered to family-friendly ideas, largely along the lines that BIll had lied and was in trouble.
