Speaking from personal experience, I hated white men before it was cool.
We were refugees from India and my dad came to Canada in 1985 and stayed here and we eventually came here in 1994. Because of the sudden influx of Sikhs into Surrey in the 1990's, the white population was experienced shock and recoiled against us. I was 9 and my brother was 16 and we often got attacked just walking home. He had a beer bottle broken over his head when he got jumped by like 4-6 guys waiting for the bus. I suffered similar fates quite regularly.
All along, I had white friends and tried my best to fit in, but eventually I started seeing the same shit in the news and, as I am a historian, I also started seeing it in other countries and civilizations. Going to college kind of opened my eyes and because it just seemed like everyone was hating Whitie. Studied more and remembered my family escaped a worse potential fate in India, and started to realize that it was white people that tormented me, it was just people.
Human beings that have an upper hand tend to exploit that fact. However, most of my academic collegues never quite grasped that fact. I still have my best friends as white guys. It's sad that these people don't see that in order to prevent prejudice they are committing it. What pisses me off the most is that these people tend to be pampered white girls or other Sikhs/Muslims/Jews, etc that have had WAAAAAY better lives than I have and never went through the violence I did.
It'll be funny when we look back at this period in history and realize, "So... people in the West wanted to prevent hate... by committing it against the people they claimed were the haters?"
