This mandatory minimum law is from Florida, where they also have robust SD laws, Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground. The chance of legitimate self-defense being construed as a crime is very, very slim.
What this law really does is prevent activist/anarcho-tyrannist judges from giving violent criminals light sentences because they sympathize with them. It also acts as a decent deterrent against gun crime, which is nice.
