Civ V creates the illussion of choice, but in reality the military route is the only way to survive at higher difficulties, especially in the early game. If you manage to survive, it means you already conquered most if not all of your direct neighbors. The irony is that to achieve any other victory, your dominance over at the very least your half of the planet needs to be uncontested.
