A guess I have is that the overflow of human labor is increasing, ie. the number of people who are not useful to the economy proper, but are only useful in so far as they're plugged into the media machine, is growing.
This machine has a certain dynamic to it, one of which is high emotionality (it generates views and interests). The more personal, the better. The more narcissistically involved, the better. People have somehow learned that being at the center of a struggle was valuable. Since they're economically useless, they can't really do anything else.
For instance, Anita Sarkesan doesn't produce games. She just parasitically latches unto a subculture to feed off of it and the content that's being created by other people. She herself is economically useless.
