If a person knows next to nothing about politics, but really wants to learn, what books should they read?
Economics books. Econ should influence your politics, not the other way around. Specifically Friedman.
Anything else about politics can be learned through history. Wikipedia is an easy, accessible and free way for this.

the unabomber manifesto
General history, and perhaps some of the calssics, like The wealth of nations by Adam Smith. Also mabe try reading some local political parties programs, usualy on their web page.
Don't try reading Marx, not because the mans not a genius, but it's way to complicated to start with and often requres a high understanding of economics. Almost no Marxists have ever read it.
