Automakers are too cheap/lazy to figure out how to build them to regs without making them fuck huge at first but after awhile they'll slim back down. Shit like carbon fiber and lightweight aluminium is cheap as hell now compared to even 5-10 years ago.
Modern suspension, tires, traction control systems and brakes have made cars far safer now than any amount of airbags do at this point.
