The problem is that in the US (and many other countries, like Japan) people prefer to play games on consoles. And it was predicted long ago that eventually this habit going to destroy PC. But, for a while, PC could compete. But mobile devices in conjunction with consoles finally made it. Lets see if Intel find a way out of this. Intel is a smart company. Chances are that they're outsourcing and/or they've done significant process re-engineering and reduced a lot of waste, making a lot of jobs redundant/obsolete.
Cutting jobs still always makes for a bad headline and drops your stock, but it's not as though Intel wouldn't recover from that within a year.
I'm an AMD fanboy as well. I can't bash Intel for making what is likely a very smart decision (though I can bash them for charging out the ass for their marginally superior product).
