Their graphics cards do have some issues and can't run some games (playing the original Max Payne requires downgrading your drivers), but holy fuck Intel charges a premium.

Look, AMD isn't very competitive, they make budget machines and that's it. If you know what to look for then you can get superior intel chips for less money.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

Out of the top benchmarked CPU's AMD doesn't make a showing until rank 76 and it's not even the cheapest.

You can even get higher speed Intel CPU's for less.

Intel Xeon E5-2660 @ 2.20GHz Benchmark score 11,891 Price $203.62

17 ranks bellow this is AMD's top chip..

AMD FX-9590 Eight-Core Benchmark score 10,259 Price $227.95

AMD is pure shit tier for people that don't know how to build systems or rate processors. It's the equivalent of a Best Buy DSLR camera that just advertises lots of megapixels but doesn't mention any other stats. GHz doesn't mean shit if you don't understand the rest. Easy way out is to compare through benchmarks.

Intel also has other enhancements for faster RAM and better front side bus and north-bridge processors.

If you don't understand it, don't dis it.

"Good enough to play meh games" is an autistic way to compare processors since even running the game could happen in a huge variety of needs and some CPU's will leave you far better prepared for the future requirements and upgrades than others.

Basically, don't be a nigger, get a 6 or more core Intel that gives you access to DDR4 Ram. You'll be much better off in the next few years.

it does actually
moore's law has hit it's functional limit. it's now more expensive to drop down to a smaller die size than it is to improve power consumption.

we're either going to expand the size of dies, increase the sizes of our computers in general, move most of our computation to massive server racks owned by whatever company, or just make smaller devices.

and no, quantum computing is not a way out.

>I remember when you'd spend a fortune on a sweet Pentium II rig, then just a year later there would be a Pentium III rig that would SHIT on your system from fucking ORBIT.

yeah because you are comparing a early P2 vs a late P3.

If you actually compare a late P2 vs an early P3 the performance suddenly isn't "shit on orbit".
The first pentium 3s where the 450 and 500mhz version, the fastest pentium 2 was 450mhz.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/254/7

The funny thing is, the performance difference wasn't that much, the only large difference came to light when the new instructions would be used, which is the same exact thing now.
When you have software that makes full use of SSE4 a 4th gen i7 it blows the shit out of a fist gen i7. Without, not so much.

Let's say 2000 find work at some other meme companies in SV, so that leaves 10000 people. Intel has offices in Chjina and China has way more STEM Ph.D's than the US, they also pay far lower taxes. The jobs don't cost less in Salary. I could go there and make similar pay to what I do here.

The big difference iis in taxes and profit margins. They are making a financial decision to maximize their return.

This is the migration of companies away from the US that conservatives are always talking about.

Put in Trump style policies to prevent them from having access to our customers to prevent them from leaving, or get used to watching these companies globalize and leave.

Businesses in the US face crippling taxes, anyone running one or looking at real numbers is looking for ways out.

This is really not a surprise. What's amazing to me is conservatives drop their rhetoric to basically claim it's to hire cheap foreign workers. Lol China isn't hiring mexicans asshole. Do you think a bunch of Doctoral engineers from University of Science and Technology of China are cheap to hire? Most Harvard students don't qualify to get in there and would still have a hard time affording it.

China is far more capable and higher paying than you all seem to think. The problem is damn oppressive taxes in the US. It's creating silicon valleys in China and India, the likes of which most of us would be lucky to get jobs in.

Most households only have one desktop if at all but they have multiple phones, tablets, and laptops.

Most gamers build their own machines but even that is a toss up, Razer and Alienware have great sales numbers.
>>

Intel is more concerned with samsung and qualcomm than AMD. They don't give a shit about desktops and know the market for them is shrinking. They want to have a monopoly on server markets and try to get a chunk of mobile.

The problem is that in the US (and many other countries, like Japan) people prefer to play games on consoles. And it was predicted long ago that eventually this habit going to destroy PC. But, for a while, PC could compete. But mobile devices in conjunction with consoles finally made it. Lets see if Intel find a way out of this. I hope so, cause I dislike both consoles and mobile devices.
>>

>>
>>71556562
consoles never caught on in the way companies like sony and microsoft expected they would. It's still a niche and now it's losing traction to mobile games and f2p games on pc. PC is dying because what most people use them for can be done on a tablet or laptop at a fraction of the cost and with more mobility.

ITT: people who don't understand that downsizing/restructuring is usually done to garner higher levels of efficiency while cutting operating costs

Intel is a smart company. Chances are that they're outsourcing and/or they've done significant process re-engineering and reduced a lot of waste, making a lot of jobs redundant/obsolete.

Cutting jobs still always makes for a bad headline and drops your stock, but it's not as though Intel wouldn't recover from that within a year.

I'm an AMD fanboy as well. I can't bash Intel for making what is likely a very smart decision (though I can bash them for charging out the ass for their marginally superior product).
