5.9 in Philippines
not happening. I bet you were the same guys who thought that the economy was going to crash last september
So, some serious stuff.
Not about Yellowstone and the end of the world, but about the real risk of major quakes in the western US.
There's currently a conference underway in Reno to examine why the Eastern Sierra hasn't had any major quakes in 60 years. It once averaged a 7.0 every 20 years.
http://phys.org/news/2016-04-sierra-eastern-front-overdue-large.html
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/research/external/reports/07HQGR0022.pdf
> "We've experienced such a long stretch of not having earthquakes, we've sort of built in a sense of complacency," he said at an Earthquake Economic Resiliency Forum ahead of the Seismological Society of America's annual meeting in Reno.
> Seismologists said Tuesday it's likely the Reno-area will eventually experience the kind of destructive quake that rocked Japan, where nearly 1,200 houses have been destroyed in and around Kumamoto.
> There were seven magnitude-6.5 or larger earthquakes in the region from 1915 to 1954, but none since, he said. The most recent magnitude-6 was 22 years ago in Carson Valley south of Carson City. The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates a magnitude-6 quake could cause up to $1.9 billion in damage in the Reno-Sparks area and $590 million at Lake Tahoe, Kent said.
If highway 80 and 89 were cut off by debris, the largest land-shipping corridor into California would be closed and require a 230 mile long detour which cannot accommodate multi-trailor trucks. Those would have to go all the way down to I-15 out of Vegas or 84 to Portland from Salt Lake City.
Union Pacific rail lines would also be severed, cutting Amtrak off and again requiring a detour all the way down to Las Vegas and Los Angeles, or north to Portland.
There's been a persistent quake storm north of Reno in the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge, far from any oil or fracking activity.
California is already spending billions on fixing our infrastructure yet our freeways collapse just from sitting there. We are not ready for another big quake.

You don't need faults to have quakes.
Charleston, South Carolina was destroyed by a 7.0 despite having no history of any seismic activity whatsoever, before or since.
The New Madrid quakes, which reached 7.9, also struck far from an active fault, although it was the site of an ancient rift valley which had experienced minor quakes before.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1811%E2%80%9312_New_Madrid_earthquakes
And the 5.8 quake in Virginia in 2011, which left the Washington Monument permanently damaged, were also far from any known faults, though again the region has gotten small quakes before.
You should be prepared for anything, anywhere. I've seen a tornado touch down in Lake Tahoe, high in the Sierra mountains. I watched the Tsunami from Japan hit Crescent City 8 feet tall. I've gunned my car down a dirt road out a wildfire in the middle of a storm.
Nearly anything can happen. But humans are able to deal with nearly anything, if we plan ahead. We all have a little bit of Batman in ourselves.

>>71551155
There are only 70K people in my town, we could evacuate to Phoenix with little to no trouble. It might take a few hours, but we would have a week to a months notice.
>>71551279
yeah, YOUR town. Now imagine all the towns in the dark red area dumb dumb.
were they predicting a tsunami in june or some shit.
>>71551463
They don't matter, there is a highway that connects my town directly to Phoenix, which is not in the dark red area, and that's the entire highway.
All of Flagstaff would be evacuated before people coming from any other towns even got close to being in the way.
It wouldn't be that hard to stage an evacuation plan for all of the dark red area. The US has a great highway system, and plenty of people could use smaller roads as well.
>>71551739
Highways would be virtually unusable, look at any disaster, that shit clogs up quick.
>>71551859
Alright, say I don't get evacuated, you would still see an evacuation (hushed up, to avoid panic) of rich/important people. We haven't seen any indication of that.
>>71539294
Currently in SoCal.
Prepping for the big one today, going to store to purchase 10 cases of water and beans and rice.
Additionally my girlfriend's grandparents live in Manta, Ecuador and it is a total shitshow down there right now.
They are trying to get out because of the looting and lack of food/water.
It WAS a beautiful place right on the beach, but now it won't nice for years.
They continue to have aftershocks today they had one in the 6's.
Also the grandparents were in a new highrise luxury apartment when the earthquake hit and they said they couldn't stand up because the shaking was so violent.
Additionally they personally know dozens of people who have been pancaked by collapsed buildings and debris.
Also people in California think we are so safe with 'muh building codes,' but in reality if anything above a 7 magnitude hits, buildings ARE going to collapse.
Prepare and stay comfy my friends.
>>71552096
stay safe SoCal bro. Maybe consider relocating? Innawoods?
>>71552096
Sounds like such a rough time, yet media doesn't seem to be interested in it. Is it really that common for people to die in earthquakes all over the world?
>>71552096
Here's the thing, no matter what preparation you do, if you stay in SoCal and this happens, you will almost definitely die. Get out of SoCal if you are actually worried this will happen.
>>71551995
You just said it yourself, hushed up.
>>71552279
Yes, always.
>>71539749

>>71554230
What do you mean? Like they'd have a layer of ash on top?
>>71552264
I won't relocate, but I have prepared(food, water, guns) and own a small property hours away in the desert.
Funny enough, a major fault line runs under my neighbors house through his backyard and he is not allowed to build on it.(I live in a suburb on the edge of town)
>>71552319
>if you stay in SoCal and this happens, you will almost definitely die.
It WILL happen eventually, I don't plan on moving out of state any time soon. I have prepared though.
>>71552279
The media has covered the situation better than I thought actually(although my assumption was that it would get NO coverage).
To see the raw devastation of any of these events you have to go online and witness pictures of dead bodies for yourself, something the american tv media never does.
People typically die because buildings collapse on them. If there is an earthquake in a 3rd world country, there are typically more casualties, however once the earthquake surpasses a certain magnitude, it doesn't matter what the building codes are(take Japan for example) and buildings/infrastructure will collapse and people will die regardless.
>>71554963
"Wetting down ash will form a glue-like material (not easy to remove) and add weight to the ash."
It just sounds like it might create a nasty thick film.
take your shit to /sci/ nobody cares about earthquakes because they happen everyday. You must be in highschool if you don't know this.

>>71552660
There's more to California than Los Angeles, San Francisco.
We produce more timber than any other state except Oregon, we produce more food, have more legal guns, the largest economy despite our government, and more registered Republicans.
The system is just set up so only cities matter.
Electoral votes should be apportioned per congressional district. It would make rural areas matter again and put a huge dent in current gerrymandering tactics.
>>71555735
Yeah, that particular earthquake was 6.9 and it caused a good amount of damage.
I wasn't in socal in 94 when the Northridge earthquake hit.
It caused a bunch of damage, a few collapsed overpasses, some deaths and that was only a 6.7 magnitude.
The Ecuador earthquake was 13 times bigger (hard to fathom that metric) but it just goes to show you how fragile our society can be.
A lot of houses around I live are at least years old. Who knows how many more earthquakes they can withstand or if they can withstand 'the big one.'
>>71556357
I do agree, being from Texas, you guys really need to shut up the libtards in San Fran and LA. It was embarrassing visiting that state and those cities really do speak the loudest. Good to hear that there's decent folk there.
>>71556014
It was a joke anon. California is, after all, still a part of the Union.
>>71551739
>US has a great highway system
iirc the whole interstate highway system is a military structure built to easily move troops, tanksand supplies during nuclear war
