i played between fallen empires and urzla's
game mechanics were significantly simpler and being much younger and poorer meant that rarity was actually a thing, back in the era of pump knights , necropotence shenanigans, millstone decks ,vesuvian doppelgänger etc etc new set rules appear more complex with such a huge repository of cards going back years combos for almost anything appear possible, the ancient era for magic had perhaps a little more magic and mystery and less tournament fever.

Not really lovecraftian outside the name. It's more classic horror (zombies, werewolves, vampires, ghosts, demons) with angels sprinkled in. The upcoming set, Eldritch Moon could be pretty lovecraftian though.
