They were seeking out a kind of hedonistic amount of entertainment to supplement their lack of healthy social lives, and the nature of the genres of the entertainment they chose (horror, thriller, war, sci-fi, crime, fantasy) eventually manifested into a real world event.
They wanted to escape from reality so much, they transformed reality into their fantasy.
