Study the economic history of the United States prior to the Civil War. The Southern landholders were taking loans to buy slaves and plantation assets, among other things, and the Civil War was essentially a massive repossession.
Read a book called "Empire of Cotton". Its a new history book, you'll find it in most book stores. It is a book going into immense detail on the importance of cotton in a global market in the 18th and 19th centuries especially.
The financing for cotton plantations was increasingly taken over by northern banks and the assets owned by those banks (the debt owed by southern plantation owners) started to be owned by banks in New York. Have you ever wondered why these bankers would have spent so much money to subdue the South? Have you ever wondered why with such tenacity they went at looting the South after the Civil War? It was the collect on as many of the assets as possible, after the Southerner's attempt to cut ties (politically, financially, etc) with these Northern banks failed.

I would argue that the economic conditions of the South going into the 19th century were more out of necessity than out of convenience. It was what they had to do in order to survive.
