The yellowstone supervolcano originates from a long lived sort of column of magma that connects the Earth's crust to the mantle. It's called a mantle plume and it's the same process that is responsible for the Hawaiian islands chain. Notice that the Hawaii islands are in a linear chain and at one point, if you follow it on a map of the ocean floor, it sort of curves north. Thats because the crust moved OVER the mantle plume while the plume itself remained stationary. the same is true in yellowstone, as the past eruptions are off centered toward the west.
The way an eruption is triggered in yellowstone is that something happens in the Mantle Plume that acts as a sort of "pulse" of magma, which, if it were to happen, it would be noticed well in advance of an eruption by irregular hydrothermal activity, an increase in seismic activity, and the crust above the incoming pulse would uplift measurably
