But lets assume that we live in a parallel universe where Croats and Serbs would be united under the same flag for hundreds of years back.
You guys would never split your alphabets, you'd have the same religion. And you already speak the same language essentially.
Now due to the seperation, several important differences developed that means that today, you belong into different ethnic groups, and there is no denying that.
HOWEVER if that weren't the case I'd argue there wouldn't be too many reasons to actually group you differently.
