I live in the RDU area as well. It's mainly areas outside of RDU that are rural and conservative.
You have three main universities here: UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, NC State-- due to this these areas tend to be more on the liberal side, although NC State may be an edge case.
RDU is a hodgepodge of transplanted Yankees and with good jobs in Tech and Med. This is probably the best city to live in in NC other than Charlotte. We don't have an epicenter like Charlotte but there is a lot going on here.
