But history is split about 50/50, the econ teachers I have met have all been antiunion, no surprise there. This means there's even more "teaching to the test." Burn out rates are quite high. The profession hasn't risen in status sufficiently. Teachers also have to deal with the consequences of poverty (students who aren't washed or well nourished). All round, teachers get a hard time in the US. No one in this political campaign is lobbying especially hard for teachers, though Bernie has said a few positive things.

I had to buy everything from staplers, hole punches to pens and pencils. I was provided a desk and a room with a broken projector I had to fix two days before my first day teaching.
I work 50 hours a week and make just under 23k a year after taxes. Because I'm a masochist I chose to lead two clubs, debate and Destination Imagination. Despite being verbally told (notice no writing) that I was to be reimbursed for these activities, I was not. This was after putting in multiple weekends and hundreds of hours. I also had to pay trip expenses out of pocket or they wouldn't have happened.
I get an hour each day to eat and grade. Since I teach history most of my grading is in the form of essays, so an hour a day isn't much. Adding to that I tend to lose half of this hour daily to fill in for absent teachers or fulfill a duty.
Should a student misbehave it takes a literal criminal offense to have them expelled. A student called a teacher a bitch to his face and got a single days suspension. This has never been a huge problem for me since I'm young and charismatic, but for the older teachers it's a huge burden.
If I didn't know I was leaving for law school this summer I would probably kill myself over the idea that this is the rest of my life.
We love most of our kids, but the general trend in education of administrators not giving a fuck and exploiting their employees can drive someone insane.

For private school sure, but all states require some kind of teaching certificate at least to teach public. As an education major, it's because education professors are generally more involved with politics of teaching as well as the theoretical rather than practical. We're taught all these different philosophies by various educators/what amounts to sociologists in all but name that discuss topics like how persecuted blacks are in society. We're also taught lots of fancy/over complicated methods for teaching that are hyped up by unnecessarily fancy words to make it sound more technical than it is. I've definitely met some incredibly talented and knowledgeable individuals, but in general the field is trying to think of increasingly complex solutions to the problems with the education system.
