I don't personally know enough about fluoride to talk about it but I know enough about dental hygiene to know that the most important thing is not to let acidic substances stay on your teeth for long periods of time. Food/drink staying on your teeth in general isn't good either, but even if it's not specifically acidic, buildup can help promote decay and infection due to bacteria gathering up.
For as little as I know, I'm perfectly fine with fluoride in my toothpaste. I guess I'm fine with it being in my tap water too because it's not like I drink a gallon of tap water every day.
