Is Old Faithful an active volcano?
Some scientists consider Yellowstone to be a “supervolcano,” which refers to volcano capable of an eruption of more than 240 cubic miles of magma. Two of Yellowstone's three major eruptions met the criteria.

Despite the myth, this geyser has never erupted at exact hourly intervals, nor is it the largest or most regular geyser in Yellowstone National Park. It does, however, erupt more frequently than any other of the large geysers

It has turned into a perpetual spouter. It has a weak eruption constantly and then discharges even higher sometimes. This is absolutely fucking not normal. Not to mention the sparks flying out of it (volcanic ash creates a static charge). Probably not a good sign.
>>
>>71399104
well if it does erupt then all well nothing we can do bout it, unless some aliens come and plug it with a giant cork or something lmao

>>
>>71399204

I tire of this incessant bickering. Is the happening happening or not? isn't there there a source for what is normal for the geyser?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Faithful#Increasing_interval

> Intervals between eruptions can range from 35 to 120 minutes, averaging 66.5 minutes in 1939,[8] slowly increasing to an average of 90 minutes apart today.[9] The time between eruptions has a bimodal distribution, with the mean interval being either 65 or 91 minutes.

> Over the years, the length of the interval has increased, which may be the result of earthquakes affecting subterranean water levels. These disruptions have made the earlier mathematical relationship inaccurate, but have in fact made Old Faithful more predictable. With a margin of error of 10 minutes, Old Faithful will erupt 65 minutes after an eruption lasting less than 2.5 minutes or 91 minutes after an eruption lasting more than 2.5 minutes.

Family is fine, house didn't fall but three friends are dead and one is missing. We got electric power this afternoon. Everybody is sleeping outside and we all watch each other's backs because the earthquake destroyed the prison and about a hundred criminals got free. Got food rations after being in line but it's limited. My family is doing good compared to others whose houses fell and have nowhere to cook or store anything.

There's been about four noticeable replicas, but not as strong as the big earthquake.

The hardest part is psychological I think. I never thought I'd see dead bodies and think "they smell, how annoying" instead of being horrified. It's nightmarish but most people have become used to walking in ruins and stumbling upon corpses by now.

It's uncommon for people in my region have insurance for things like this. I think it's more common in the mountain region where you have the permanent threat of volcanos, the earthquake destroyed the coast and most people don't think or prepare for disasters here. My family does not have insurance, for example.

The largest buildings that were destroyed were government owned, but many private clinics, schools, shops and residences were destroyed too and I can't even think how people will fix them. Or when.

Second, any earthquake under five(> 5) is not worth getting excited over.
Not capable of doing enough damage, and isn't strong enough or conclusive enough for anything "happening tier"

Well if I start to see more and more low scale earthquakes, am I wrong to conclude that there is more seismic activity? My real question is, does this increase in minor seismic activity predicate a larger event?
>>
>>71403901
A lot of low scale earthquakes would just release pressure. It would be bad if it wasn't active at all.
>>
>>71403901
While the increase in minor active suggests that there is tectonic movement, it is just that. Natural occurrence.
It is possible that these little events can be a precursor to larger quakes, and has been observed before - but it is very difficult to rely on the earth alone telling us when things will go down.
>>
>>71404032

Only on some types of seismic location

Some types they will release pressure, others it just adds it.

Like San Andreas.

The media says it's called earthquake lights, energy discharge from the earth during an earthquake. You can read about it in Wikipedia, but it sounded theoretical, like it was not an understood phenomenon.

What can I do to prepare?

t. Increasingly nervous goy
>>
>>71404415
Well, it's not my thread. I was just hoping to read some Trump banter, but I guess it helps talking about this with other people.

I was with my brother, the first thing we did was stay at the door frame. Our TV set fell down, tables fell, we were in a second floor and we could hear stuff banging downstairs. The walls moved, I could feel them "hit" me. It got dark seconds into the earthquake and it lasted for at least a minute and a half. It felt like two minutes. After everything was still again we just gtfo. The town was dark. We went to check on our parents and that's when we realized everything was destroyed the further you walked into the center of town. But everything was dark, so we couldn't tell how bad it was until the morning.
>>
>>71404762
I don't give a fuck about that Old Fag OP, you can always get your fix of trump banter at any old time thanks to shill-bots..
you are literally an Ecuadorian that's balls deep in this shit. that's insane that you guys did not die from your own house collapsing.

How bad, scale 1/10 was it in the morning?
1=not bad, 10=irredeemable
>>
>>71404209

The thing is, when you're forced to face those things, you suck it up. There's literally no other choice. Once the mess is dealt with and you're not having to stare it in the face anymore, seriously give it a few months, that's when you begin to see signs of PTSD set in.

Be sure to take care of yourself.
>>
>>71404975
I guess the least thing I expected was seeing a picture of my hometown in a thread OP, seeing how irrelevant Ecuador is.

In the morning building wise it was 7/10. The town center area is 10/10, but the rest of the town still looks like a town. Overall however I'd say 10/10, because it was in the morning that we were able to see the dead bodies in the debris. It was also then that we realized that there was no way out of town and no way to get food. It also didn't help that there was a replica near down, so people were also expecting that an even bigger earthquake would finish us all.

I really thought I was going to die when thar earthquake happened, I don't think anyone ever imagined seeing solid walls wobble like that or seeing your things fly all over the place, so it's just not something you're prepared for.
>>
>>71405007
this
i was a hostage a few years ago, got pulled out, i was completely all right until i went to therapy and started to think about it, then it hit me.

pstd isn't what people think it normally is btw, i can kinda go around my life normally, i just can't be around bright lights, cops, or loud noises. on new years i go way out into the bush and camp there for a while to get away from the fireworks, and i've gotten into a lot of jogging because that helps me bring my mind off everything

stay safe ecuador bro. being close to people you trust helps it. remember that you had no control over it, guilt will eventually set in, it always does.
>>
>>71405356
>>71405007
I read this and feel nothing, even though I understand how bad it is. So I guess you're absolutely right that when things are back to normal, or as close to normal as possible, that's when the signs will appear.

Will it at least help that the entire surviving town will have the same PTSD? Like will it lessen it somehow? I'm scared that we will all just lose hope and let our home fade away.
>>
>>71405199
So hold up
> It was also then that we realized that there was no way out of town and no way to get food.
have y'all solved that problem yet?
I do not understand what a replica is
>>71405427
it 'should' help because you all can be united in your shared crisis. Do you honestly believe things will ever get back to normal? and if you do, then be the one anon making a difference in your community and keeping your neighbors and family positive and hopeful.
>>
>>71405427
most likely a lot of people from your town will be at risk of developing it, especially ones that have lost friends/family/their house.

keep in mind, you're in the middle of an odd type of survival mechanism right now. doing what's needed (getting food, keeping an eye out for watch, etc) is better to your survival than pondering it. that's why you're not currently feeling anything, your body is deliberately stopping any emotions.

i felt the same way. it took me a few weeks after i got pulled out to actually begin processing anything, then a longer time before i started actually pulling everything apart in my head, then i got fucked up.

stay close to your family and any friends you have left mate. they're going to be the best things you could ever have in a while.

>>
>>71405622
The roads still look like OP's picture, but some are open again so we can leave now. But nobody is leaving, I guess we all want to rebuild and help out here.

Food is still a problem. We could get rations since two days ago, but buying was impossible (and cooking is impossible for many people anyway). Authorities say this will be resolved in the next days. At least we're not starving but it does make you feel hopeless.

Sorry, replicas are the Spanish name for aftershocks. That's what I meant.

I don't think things will go back to normal, to be honest (senpai). The president said it would take years to recover and I agree. What I hope is that this unites us and give us the drive to rebuild our town and make it safer, bigger and better. What I fear is that we will remain stuck with the ruins and this smell of rotting dead bodies and just give up. Most people seem to have hope, but so far it's just hope to survive. Nobody can even think about rebuilding. I don't know when we'll start to do that, but if we don't then we're done for.

>>71405710
That's exactly how I'm feeling, or rather not feeling. We Latin Americans are very tight with our families and my town was fairly small, so there's a strong sense of community. I think everybody that survived has this community mode on, neighbors help one another is how most people are acting now, though a bunch of retards did try looting but it was short lived. Thanks for the advice. I just hope we can all deal with this and maybe even channel it into something positive.

Geologist here, graduated 2 years ago from the University of Alaska Anchorage's Geology program.

There is nothing to worry about. Earthquakes happen all the damn time. There are about 4,000 earthquakes per month here among the southwestern region, ranging from 1-4, sometimes 5 or 6 at most.
The same is for any region around multiple fault lines. There are 3 fault lines running through Anchorage, and there was a ~5 just a few days ago. Shook a couple times then died down.

The idiot who keeps posting these threads is just playing on everyone's lack of knowledge.
