Based on what I've found, there was a concerted effort to eliminate all evidence of systematic termination. They weren't just going to leave those documents around. I don't think it's even particularly relevant to have an accurate number either -- morally, it's irrelevant to me whether it was 100,000 or 6 million people who were killed. The fact that there was an attempt to organize genocide should be what is relevant here, not the numbers.
I'd rather not be drawn into a long debate on the Holocaust either, because that isn't my point. My point is that the right pushes narratives too, just like the left, and this is one of them.
