I'm a senior in highschool w/ a 3.45 GPA and i got a 29 on my ACT so I am capable to go to most colleges/universities but i have absolutely no idea what i would study?

So it leads me to this question, is the military a viable option?

Redpill me on the military (more specifically Navy and Marines).

I only have second hand experience but it can be really good. With your grades look into doing ROTC.

Go to local recruiting office andask about everything do your homework online also. Look before you leap, anon. Don't look for too long though.
>>
>>71377945
He said he doesn't know what to study

OP- No matter what you do with the millitary, go to college first and become an officer. You will literally be a bitch if you're enlisted
>>
>>71377945
As i said i have no idea what i would want to study :/
>>
>>71378125

>>
>>71377860
I was in similar situation. I didn't know wtf I wanted to do. No one ever told me what I needed to do to actually go to college (testing and applications, school counselors were useless), and I was always interested in the military, so I joined the Navy. Best decision I ever made. I separated a few years back to go to college, but part of me wishes I stayed in. If you get something in information dominance and you have a good work ethic and can fit in with the lifestyle, there is hardly any better alternative as a fresh high school graduate.
>>
Marinara Corpse veteran here- It's a very viable option. It gives you time to think about what you want to do with your life. Plus once you get out you can basically go to college for free while being paid.
>>
>>71377860
I was almost in the same boat, with a shittier GPA. I did well on the ASVAB, joined the Marines, got out and still didn't know what to study. So I just went to college and kept taking Math classes and now I have a degree in Math. So, even if you don't figure out what you want to do, you'll learn how to just do stuff, and that will probably make you successful.
>>
>>71377860
I'd go coast guard if I were dead set on military if I were you.

Boats are cool and you get to zip around on bad ass ships shooting machine guns at drug smugglers and shit, plus more comfy than navy or actual military.

They have higher standards though IIRC
>>
>>71378228
Also, if anyone tells you to do ROTC or go to college first to be an officer... fuck that. Go enlisted. Earn your stripes. You always have the option of applying for a commissioning program and if you're in a high ASVAB community and you work hard, you have a very good chance of being accepted.
>>

When comparing an officer who went straight to college after high shool and got a commission to an officer who was formerly enlisted, the difference in the amount of respect you are given is tremendous. The enlisted hate non-mustang O1-O3s. Also, many jobs aren't open to officers, or if they are, you are better suited as an enlisted to do them. Things like combat rescue swimmer, medics, JTAC, and most special operations.

military for 4 years then college isn't a terrible plan

you get work experience and discipline and are a better hire for jobs and you get college paid for and are older and more mature than the average college student

you need to find out if military culture and life is a good fit for you though
>>
>>71377860
I would suggest ROTC.
With your scores, you're pretty much guaranteed an Army scholarship, maybe even a 4 year one.
Yes, its four years of bullshit, but the leadership experience is invaluable and will make you into a better person. You're guaranteed a job after, and if you don't want active, you can go reserves for guard.
>>
>>71378125
I used to be in that position and didn't join. I got a high score on the ASVAB and they told me I could do any job I wanted in the Marines. A lot of people told me not to do it because they've seen/heard many stories that some people don't get what they wanted. You'd also be throwing away a few months of your life if you don't pass basic training, but you get paid though.
>>
>>71378899
I'm also thinking about joining the police force but i don't know i'm quite despondent towards everything right now......
>>
educate yourself first and if you still want to go in, become an officer, i remember this talk with my dad and he told me that by going in enlisted, "you'd be their nigger", don't be anyone's nigger, because if you want someone to write your story for you, they will, and they won't give two shits to what you want.
>>
I don't see why kids think they have to immediately do something like college or military after highschool. How about just going and getting a normal job for a couple years and get some real life perspective? Save shit like college or even the military for after 21.
>>
>>71378873
You won't even know until a year or more into taking college classes. Enlisting will certainly help you weed out some thing you don't want to do. If you do ROTC I can practically guarantee you will be forced to choose a degree and you will be stuck with it and it won't even matter.

go to college and take general engineering classes for the first year and youll also be taking your General classes as well that will flesh out your interests

if you dont know after a year take a semester off and think, but overall in a year you should have a good idea if you dont party too much
>>
>>71379299
A fine option, but if you did navy (or Air Force probably) you could get your associates by the end of your first enlistment.

vet here, don't join the military, it's not worth it

Enlist. You will get a work ethic, or at least the ability to tolerate near-fatal levels of bullshit. This will make some things easier for you when you go to college. It's not like the smug veteran commercials, it's a bit more like building up a resistance to things that suck. For instance, having something due very short term is not that stressful, I've had things come up that were due yesterday, fuck your weekend, we have to do this now. And post 9/11 GI Bill will make college almost free, depending on where you go. Just don't lose sight of what you want to do and let yourself get sucked into the machine.

Google ways to get NEETbux. And enjoy your newfound freedom

>>71377860
How old are you? 18? 50 years ago, you should have known what you wanted to do with your life by now. Now though? When any degree you seek could leave you in the hole the rest of your life? It's not a decision you want to make with the undeveloped mind of a teenager. Take some time and figure out how you want to spend the next 60+ years of your life.

As for the military, if it's what you want, go for it. It's not like you're going to go into debt for spending 8 years on Uncle Sam's side.

>>71380036
Depends on what you're stationed on. Mostly likely it will be a carrier, so a deployment cycle looks like: ~7-10 month deployment, month off, 4-8 months dry dock (if applicable), the 2 years of going out for 30-40 days at a time with 1-2 months pier side in between until the next deployment. Amphibious ships are somewhat similar. Not too familiar with CRUDES, but you'll be out for short stints preparing for deployments. Types of training depends on your job. For intelligence-type work, you'll spend a lot of time learning new skills, new systems, and spending some times in "oh fuck everything went to hell" training scenarios before you're deployment.
>>
If I were in you position I'd join and ROTC for the Navy or Airforce and try for pilot.
Unless you can't afford college.

If you're good with math, and like working with your hands, go engineering.
The ratings(jobs) for engineering are:
Main Propulsion:
Machinist Mate- conventional steam and nuke.
Gas Turbine Mechanics and electrical Tech
Enginemen- Diesel propulsion

Auxilaries:
Electricians Mate- electrician
Machinery repairman- CNC machinist etc.
Hull Technician-Welders and pipe fitting/ plumbing
DamageControlmen- Fire Fighting/ fire marshals of the fleet.
Any one of these jobs, will pretty much guarantee a job on the outside, that will pay a living wage.

Don't do ROTC.

Join up enlisted, do your 3 years, get out and use your GI Bill to attend a really good private school. You have no idea how easy it is for a veteran with mediocre grades to get admitted to an Ivy League tier school. And they will throw so much financial aid at you your head will start to spin. You'll literally get paid more money than you were getting while in the military just to get one of the best educations possible.

Officers don't get to take advantage of this. They usually do ROTC at some shit state school, waste their college experience with stupid ROTC bullshit and then have to serve at least 4 years in the active duty military.

How good is enlisted Air Force? My best friends brother is a retard, managed to get a "decent" score on ASVAB and went AF.

He literally works a normal maintenance job, and then goes to live on base in what sounds like a pretty nice 2 story townhouse playing games all day while doing college online for free plus the other benefits.

Is this really what its like? Because this guy isn't smart at all, but he has a better life than like half my friends who went to college instead and just straight up enlisted with no specific job selected. The only hard part is every couple months he has to go through gun training or something where they are forced to stay up for days at at time for a couple weeks.

If you got a 29 on the ACT, you should be going to college. Do Gen Ed for two years at a state school and figure out what you want to do from that. A state school is ideal because they'll have a lot of different programs, and they will be at least average in quality.

Quit being an underachiever and spend the next four months deciding on a college and a major. Hopefully you weren't lazy and didn't apply to anything. You were supposed to do that by December of last year.

right now, at this point in your life, what you study seems super important. in 10 years it will barely matter. your field of study is really just a general guide for the direction you will set your life down. that said, if you want to work with the more practical, and make more money, go into engineering/mathematics.

There is an 18X "MOS". It's not a real MOS, just a set of enlistment options strung together in a contract. It is essentially 11B option 4 with a guaranteed entrance into the 18 series pipeline.

But yeah, it kind of exists.
>>
>>71379960
This.

Probably the biggest reason for joining is what I was told. I told someone that I thought about joining for my entire life. They told me that if I didn't join, as they hadn't joined, then I would spend the rest of my life wondering what life would have been like had I served. Even when it sucks, which it often does, and I feel like a prisoner sometimes, I remind myself that I would have never known for sure had I not joined.

People who go to college straight out of HS are the worst cancer. They are fucked from the get-go and are empty vessels to be filled by liberal shithead professors and upperclassmen. Go work for a year or two. Get something on your CV besides chess club, your part time job at subway or your GPA in high school. Learn the value of a dollar and a day's work. You will fly circles around your classmates and will be feared by your professors.

If you join, try to go officer, there are some good programs where you get a degree. Stay 21, and the naval academy are good ones.
