I'm black and there's a lot of Muslims in my father's side of the family. My father is christian but I think his father was Muslim (?) and he and the rest of his family doesn't eat pork. I do go to Sunni mosque with my wife, and I sometimes bring her to a Shia mosque with me.
Even though I tend to pray with my arms folded and say Ameen like Sunni's do, I still use the praying stone and praying mat that Shia's use, but I think the reason I do it is because I identify Shia with Iranian, so keeping my Shia customs is a form of nationalism for me.
A majority of my beliefs align more with Shia's than Sunni's, so I think at the end of the day even though I only consider myself Muslim, I'm still technically a Shia.

Be it establishing oppositional identity vis a vis the (perceived) white religion of Christianity, or converting in prison to either absolve oneself of sins via shahada or the establish a certain structure for survival. This is interesting bc Islam was created in this kind of hostile environment realm, so many of the ideas can actually help establish an almost military-like regimen for self-defense...more so than xtianity which will likely get you raped or killed in prison turning the other cheek. Finally, many blacks in the U.S. I'm the 50's did honestly think Islam was a black religion. Some also thought Judaism was a black religion. These were working class cults that preyed on the urban poor while preaching white and black notions of the universe. Israelites and NOI are prime examples, but they were many.
I converted back in 2001, shortly before 9/11 because I was appalled at the efforts of the Catholic Pope to hide the rampant child sex scandal. Just so you know.
Finally, to the Arabs on the one page posted here talking about abeed, and the "Syrian" bad mouthing blacks. Let me ask you... if Islam is for everyone, why do you separate black and Arab? Well, for starters, Sunnis tend to love Ayesha and Abu Bakr. Ayesha was Muhammad's widow but did not want Ali to be Caliph. So, it's the age old question: should you support your man's woman, or his cousin?

Yeah this is one of things in which I meant that happened so long ago and Sunni's and Shia's should just let it go for Islam's sake. Who cares what happened back then. Abu Bakr was Aisha's father, of course she would want him to be the successor of Islam rather than Ali.
Shia's believe that Mohammad appointed Ali as his successor before his death. Sunni's believe that Mohammad never named his successor and that it should be Abu Bakr.
But honestly is this issue really worth fighting over? Regardless of what our views are of the Imamate and the Companions, that doesn't change the fact that Shia's and Sunni's both worship Allah as their one and only God, accept Mohammad as his messenger, and follow the words and teachings of the Holy Qur'an.
To me the hardest ideological barrier to find agreement upon would be the Shia's belief in the 12 Imam's, but arguing over who Mohammad's successor should be and who thought what back then shouldn't matter to Muslims today.

I personally do not believe Mohammad's successor is something we should be fighting over, because it takes away from Allah, and our mutual love and commitment to Allah is enough to make us both Muslim, and political bickering from over 1000 years ago should not still be dividing us today. There isn't even a leader of Islam for either sect today, so why should some issue from so long ago continue to divide us? Islam is about worshipping Allah. The history that came after Mohammad shouldn't separate us.

Maybe the companions thing is big for Sunni's and I don't know enough about it, but if you're referring to the Hadith and Sunnah, that's something that can be compromised on. While Shia's don't follow the Sunnah and Hadith, I personally think they should. And theoretically if I was a big Shia figure and I was talking with big Sunni figures to unite our sects, I would agree that we should all follow the Sunnah and Hadith.
