Why do people keep complaining that eating healthy is expensive? It must be a headache to hear this over and over for the politicians.

Stop posting this faggot picture.

>implying that much beans would cost a whole fucking $2
>implying 2 green bell peppers would be $3
>implying bacon is fucking $9 a pound

That last image would be closer to $4, realistically speaking.

Eating healthy is even cheaper than people think.

Cooking at home at the same price as fast food will give you great menus to choose from, with much better ingredients.

I realize this image is supporting that eating healthy is cheap, but this image doesn't really do it justice.

Consider the following:
I got a 10-pound bag of chicken thighs and legs for $0.29 a pound. That's 10 pounds of meat for less than $3.

I cooked some, froze some, marinated some for a day later. Served with rice, beans, and fresh-baked bread (literally dirt cheap to make yourself).

Easily under $1.50 per meal.

In the US, junk food is much cheaper relative to healthy food than in Europe. In Portugal, if you are really poor, you don't have money to buy shitty food but you have more than enough to buy healthy food. You can make soup for 6 meals for just 2€. And no, it doesn't have to be watery. In addition, fish, rice and potatoes are really cheap in Portugal, so you have the main ingredients for your main dish right there.

A packet of seeds is $1.29, and you can learn to save your own. You can grow a lot of vegetables on 1000 ft^2. It gets even cheaper if there are any sources of animal manure nearby, because a lot of farms/stables just want to get rid of it.

>>

This.
I've been eating healthy for a few years now and it's fucking extremely irritating to have to walk through the store looking at the back of every item to try to avoid:

EDTA
BHA
BHT
Hydrogenated anything / trans fats
Aspertame and any other sugar substitute
HFCS
literally any food coloring
and the 50 other things I can't remember right now but recognize on a box

This limits me to foods that specifically state things like 'no preservatives' which tend to also be labeled 'organic' at triple the price since they know people like me won't buy stuff from their competitors.

What people don't understand is that the biggest threat from GMO's isn't what they can put inside of you, it's what they can put inside of other plants. Even other agriculturists believe that the biggest threat we have form GMO's is GM Sorghum. GM Sorghum can cross with a whole host of common weeds. If we put any gene into Sorghum, it is only a matter of time before it breeds it into the weeds it's designed to fight, thus creating a "superweed".

This. You'll never want store bought strawberries again. Mine are already flowering. So are my blackberries.

A lot of fruits and vegetables are picked before they are fully ripe, because they have to survive being shipped to the store. Getting a blackberry that has ripened on the cane is far better than getting one that was picked before it was ripe.

This. Bulk buying rice is so incredibly cheap it's not even funny. It lasts for at least a month or two as well, for $10. It usually costs me around $150 every 3-4 weeks to eat after I buy everything. 12kg of chicken, eggs, rice, sweet potatoes, and vegetables, with some fruits and a few other things. It's so incredibly cheap, and I'm healthy as hell.

Everyone else that says it expensive as hell to eat healthy isn't doing it right. Eating healthy isn't about buying every single fruit and vegetable from the shelf.

Only the McDonalds meal is fit for consumption, the other ones contain raw meat. Since the other "meals" are really just raw ingredients, it's more fair to look instead at the price of the raw ingredients of a McDonalds meal. According to this list it would be around $2.5.

Alternativly, you could add the cost of preparing the meals to the raw ingredients. Honestly, I don't think you can compete with McDonalds on preparing meals in a cost effective fashion. It takes them 3 minutes to make a burger, and they can make 20 of them at the same time. Yet, it still costs them $25 to prepare this meal. Because it's not profit, they're not making 1000% profit.

>Why do people keep complaining that eating healthy is expensive? It must be a headache to hear this over and over for the politicians.

It comes cheaper if you make the dishes at home instead of dining every day in some new-age-fucking-fashion restaurant. Sadly, in here at least, the veggies are so fucking expensive in the winter if you want something that is actually from finland. How ever, it would seem that it is for some fucking reason, to import shit here from other countries and still sell it 50% cheaper. Even tho the price shouldnt matter too much I usually just make sure that the products I feed to my kids has veggies and fruuts available at all times, the meat is actual meat instead of some shit that is mass producted in a fucking factories, as little or none of the chemicals that are being used almost in anything now days AND I cook the food my self instead of feeding them... whats the word (eines perkele), shit that has been broduced and packed somewhere and is ready to be consumed. Also, no sugar, no salt and no fats beyond reasonable amounts.

Me however eat what ever is available at the time.

The beans, vegetables, fruits in your image? Probably laden with pesticides.

The bread? Various preservatives, likely made with some white (bleached, nutrient leached) flour. Don't even get me started on the meat. Cheap meat probably comes from a factory farmed animal that couldn't move for the duration of its life, for most of which it was pumped full of antibiotics factory farms don't care about the quality of life or produce, or consumers, and they find it cheaper in the long run to just feed animals antibiotics for their whole lives rather than actually install preventative measures/ treat any diseases/ injuries/ infections. One chicken factory farm even cut the beaks off the chickens en masse because they were pecking each other to death. Thousands of them in a tiny barn-cage all packed in and surrounded by other dead chicks/ chickens, shit, piss. No one ever done scientific studies to say meat that was fed antibiotics its whole life is safe. I never considered myself a hippy but the shit that goes on in the meat industry is cruel and callous. Buy free range if you aren't a sociopath, and buy organic if you care about your health.

I'm not saying the McDonalds shit is any better, but don't get any grand delusions about cheap supermarket produce.
>>
>People are too lazy to actually cook properly in the lower classes and often buy prepackaged shit where assembly is factored into cost.

GMO is the one thing that's actually just a meme. There's fuck all to suggest a little genetic modification changes anything about the food negatively.

If I change a kids hair gene from black to blonde and he lives his life with blonde hair, there's nothing else different about him. It's the same with food. They're not changing the genes to make it give you cancer or some shit, ffs. GMO is a good thing that science has given us. It's fucking ridiculous NOT to mess with the genes of our food when we have the science and technology to do so.

We should be worrying more about pesticides on our food than some gene that got changed to make it more resistant to some fruit flies.

Eating healthy is kinda fun, I managed to procure the most basic of basics.

My foods basically have a "base", which could be potatoes, beans, noodles and a few other things.

Besides that I just buy a package of veggies, an assortment of them, all cut up and ready to rock.

then il add in some meat, sometimes its pork sausages, often its ground beef, along with some spices for the beef.

and then if I did enough sport (to burn calories) il add in some packaged (but non gmo) saus, you know the one they add to potatoes often.

I know how to make an actual pizza as well, know how to make bread too. Its easy enough.

So while I may not be a master chef with many menu's, this "base", "veggies" and "meat" tripple play is good enough to make use of nearly everything in the store. At least everything that is healthy.

And it doesnt get boring, because I can always switch the base and the other ingredients, to keep my diversity high enough.

It's not sustainable, in part for reasons that have to do with how organisms develop resistance to toxins over multiple generations, and also in part due to how industrial agriculture works. Weeds are already becoming round-up resistant, and instead of backing off for 3 or 4 years and going back to traditional plowing to let genetic drift alleviate the problem, farmers are doubling down on the round-up, making the problem worse. Insects will become BT resistant in a few years as well.

If you want an eye-opener, search out the supply chain interaction study that was done on Swedish ketchup. That's just looking at one single, simple product, and the complexities involved are insane. They also imply a lot of energy consumption. On average, 10 calories of energy are burned to produce 1 calorie of food.

>>
>>71331411
Where was the GMO problem? You described the issue of herbicide resistance but there's nothing specific about it being the fault of GMO.

And in case you missed the memo, corn is naturally resistant to another herbicide(atrazine), so you don't need GMOs to have herbicide resistance among crops. And yes, atrazine resistant weed is a thing.

Herbicide resistance was a thing before roundup, and it was a thing after roundup. Due to the efficiency of roundup the effect was actually that resistance incidence in weed dropped slightly after the introduction of roundup ready crops. So trying to pin herbicide resistance onto GMO is simply dishonest.

KEK

They made various crops resistant to round-up. Farmers changed their farming methods so that they could spray round-up on their fields before and after the plants have emerged. Now that they rely on that kind of method, round-up resistant weeds are going to be competing with soil nutrients and sunlight with the crops, which means reduced crop yields. This is only going to get worse over time.

Eating healthy is extremely cheap but requires shopping discipline. Better go with a list there. You can literally buy kilograms of rice and vegetables for a few dollars/euroshekels and eat for a few days straight. Buy some meat to go with it and that's it. Pasta is a great option too if you buy big quantities.

At my poorest I achieved to go on a whole week with ~30€ by cooking all my meals at home and reading the nutrition facts of each food before for planning my meals.

You firstworlders are picky and weak as fuck. Get real food like a man does not that fast food shit.
Not even being NEET is an excuse, because if there's something you have is time to learn how to cook.
>>
I don't know how healthy it is but one thing is certain, living off beans and rice + bulk chicken + home grown veggies is cheap as fuck. I don't eat much per meal, but I still only spent 14$ on food last month. If only I could halt my drinking habit, I would be rich.

>Cooking at home at the same price as fast food will give you great menus to choose from, with much better ingredients.

this. for the price of a supersize extra value meal you can literally buy a sirloin, bakers potato and a head of lettuce and tomato for your salad.

you can eat for days on a frozen whole chicken --- just salt the thing and bake 350 F for 1.25 hours. save carcass for your chicken flavored ramen noodles and add a can of mixed veggies for stew. it's fucking easy to eat cheap.
