The Petrodollar will fail for other reasons than a "gold backed currency" it has more to do with supply and demand. Obviously, demand is falling and the recent collapse of the price of a barrel of oil on Brent Crude is not likely to improve especially since OPEC didn't reach an agreement in Doha:
