>Old Faithful is named such because of it's pattern. Although it does not go off at precise times as some people think, it does have a pattern of eruption (usually a couple of minutes), and then stopping, with only a little steaming in between these steam eruptions. I have noticed lately, it's eruptions are lasting longer, and instead of stopping in between, it is going constantly for long periods of time. I started noticing this a couple of months ago, but recently, it seems to have increased.

Yellowstone is an underground "supervolcano". The lava pocket is highly pressurized, and is the size of Colorado.
An explosion of this scale would be a major global catastrophe of a scale never before seen in human history. The midwestern US would become uninhabitable. The entire atmosphere of the planet would be darkened by ash and surface temperatures would drop precipitously, as they did when Krakatoa exploded hundreds of years ago.
It's likely that events like this were what resulted in the mass extinctions of the past.

We got firewood for days son
In the event of a caldera eruption, particularly one in the middle of the United States, we would be royally fucked. Anyone living in Wyoming or the immediate surrounding states would die instantly in the eruption. Many many more would die from the ash-fall, which would blanket states as far as the west coast and certain areas on the eastern side of the U.S. The U.S. would pretty much collapse in the aftermath, many countries would be inundated with refuges due to the collapse of the U.S., starting with Canada and Mexico.
In the years that followed, we would see dramatic drops in global temperatures, along with the impact of this. It would be a bad time to be alive.

What's ironic is these are many of the states which cling to an apocalyptic version of Christianity.
It's almost like they can sense the impending doom.
The Midwest is the breadbasket of the US, and indeed much of the world. Combined with the lower global sunlight levels due to the ash cloud and the lower temperatures, this would be an absolutely devastating blow to global food production.

Well I think I have the answers everyone.
First, why is it that there is a super volcano at Yellowstone? Right because the Earth's crust is weak at that point.
Now here's the thing, if we can start filling in the area with trash, heavy metals, etc. we could strengthen the crust and it would deflect the volcanic powers underneath to either be contained, or it would force it to somewhere else on the earth where it is weaker.
Your welcome.
>>71263678
I've thought for a while now that hitting a supervolcano caldera such as Yellowstone or Toba with a bunker buster armed with a nuke might set it off. Conversely, a rod from god would likely work as well. But I'm no geologist, it just seems to be what would happen.

No. While Krakatoa is a volcano that has the propensity to erupt violently enough to cause widespread localized destruction (and it has), a caldera eruption is a much different animal.
To put it in perspective, Krakatoa erupted violently enough that it produced one of the loudest sounds ever heard, destroyed cities, and was seen from thousands of miles away. Tambora (also a supervolcano) almost wiped out humanity, reducing us from potentially millions of humans to about 3,000 to 10,000 and caused a volcanic winter that lasted about 6-10 years, it may have even affected human evolution.

I really hope you fags aren't rooting for Yellowstone to go off, at least not if you are living in the U.S. Everything around Wyoming is going to be incinerated or buried in ash. The ash-fall from Mt. St. Helens reached Oregon and some parts of California, the ash-fall from Yellowstone is going to blanket states as far as Arizona, Texas, and Alabama. Temperatures world-wide could drop by as much as 10 degrees, maybe more, anyone in the U.S. will be a refugee, simply because government will cease to function in the U.S., interstate commerce will shut down, emergency services will shut down. Panic will spread, people will loot, kill, rape, etc. People will starve, travel will stop, gas will be pillaged. Think The Walking Dead, minus the zombies, but with the Saviors, etc. That will be the U.S.
Needless to say, few on /pol/ will be up for that challenge. You will be fucked, hard. If you think Yellowstone is happening tomorrow or anytime next week, I advise you to get on a plane to out of here or get in your car and go north or south...
>>71266781
In Michigan as well. Happenings where we have a chance of surviving based on our own ability and readiness is what we want. We don't want an extinction level event.

When the whole world gets occluded by ash, there are no bread baskets anymore. Food will be as scarce in the West as in poorer parts of the world, meaning that a strict policy of closed borders everywhere will be a very sane and widely accepted policy. In this current refugee crisis, the effects aren't immediately perceptible by the common person. But when everybody starves? You can bet your ass even the hardest cuck will be reluctant to let more people in.

>"Yellowstone is one of the biggest supervolcanos in the world," he says. "Sometimes it erupts quietly with lava flow, but once or twice every million years, it erupts very violently, forming large calderas," which are very large craters measuring tens of kilometers in diameter.
If it happens again, and he says most scientists think that it will, he predicts such an eruption will obliterate the surroundings within a radius of hundreds of kilometers, and cover the rest of the United States and Canada with multiple inches of ash. This, effectively, would shut down agriculture and cause global climate cooling for as long as a decade, or more, he says. A volcanic event of such magnitude "hasn't happened in modern civilization," he says.

A bunch of natural things that happen on a cycle having overlapping cycles. With the exception of the global heat wave, that is at least influenced by human work.
Big earthquakes on the ring of fire are common, it doesn't get that name for nothing.
San Andreas is a time bomb that has been waiting to go off for a long time.
The inner workings of the Hydro-thermal features at Yellowstone are not totally known, this could just be a natural cycle old faithful goes through.
It's the hottest month again because we've somewhat disrupted the natural climate cycles, and the excess heat is also what is driving the storms.

ITT: people who know nothing about geology.
If yellowstone was really about to have a major eruption everyone in the area would know. Earthquakes would become extremely frequent. Thermal expansion would cause the ground there to rise by 100s of feet, there would all kinds of outgassing and mini-explosions too.
Plus not every eruption from Yellowstone is catastrophic, some are barely worse than your typical volcano. The last two Yellowstone eruptions (The Thumb lake 150k ya and the Mary bay eruptions 13k ya) haven't been that bad at all. Everyone always compares the "next big one" to the worst one on record (the Huckleberry ridge eruption) which happened 2.1 million years ago and was the first. Calderas tend to lessen in explosivity and damage and Yellowstone has definitely exhibited that pattern. They are fed (we think) by mantle plumes that migrate over time (or more precisely the overlying tectonic plate moves).
The Yellowstone magma chamber is huge (4000 cubic Kms) but seismic data shows it's probably only about 6-8% melt and most geologists think it isn't likely to produce another Huckleberry ridge or Lava Creek style supereruption.
The event 13k years ago that formed Mary's Bay is more likely the type of thing we will see. It'd be bad, but really not much worse than something like Krakatoa.
I'd be much more worried about the Long Valley Caldera in California or the Indonesian Caldera (whose name escapes me) both of those were formed much more recently and probably still have enough melt to produce a supereruption.

In northern New Zealand, there's a big lake called Lake Taupo. It's also a supervolcano.
Here's a description of its most recent major eruption:
>The eruption went through several stages.
>A minor eruption occurred beneath the ancestral Lake Taupo.
>A dramatic increase in activity produced a high eruption column from a second vent, and pumice was deposited over a wide area.
>Water entered the first vent, and mixed with the magma, producing a white ash-rich pumice fall.
>A new vent formed, and produced a dark ash- and obsidian-rich fall deposit.
>A larger eruption ensued, producing pumice over a huge area, and a small ignimbrite deposit.
>The most destructive part of the eruption then occurred. Part of the vent area collapsed, unleashing about 30 km3 of material, that formed a fast moving (600–900 km/h) pyroclastic flow.
>Rhyolitic lava domes were extruded some years later, forming the Horomatangi reefs and Waitahanui bank.[9]
>The main pyroclastic flow devastated the surrounding area, climbing over 1500 metres (5000 ft) to overtop the nearby Kaimanawa Ranges and Mount Tongariro, and covering the land within 80 kilometres (50 mi) with ignimbrite from Rotorua to Waiouru. Only Ruapehu was high enough to divert the flow.
>The power of the pyroclastic flow was so strong that in some places it eroded more material off the ground surface than it replaced with ignimbrite. Valleys were filled with ignimbrite, evening out the shape of the land.
>All vegetation within the area was flattened. Loose pumice and ash deposits formed lahars down all the main rivers.
>The eruption further expanded the lake, which had formed after the much larger Oruanui eruption. The previous outlet was blocked, raising the lake 35 metres above its present level until it broke out in a huge flood, flowing for more than a week at roughly 200 times the Waikato River's current rate.
