The role of men and women in the home has been in a constant state of change as society shifts and the types of tasks that need to be done changes. The roles of a couple in an agricultural society are different than the roles of a couple in a labor-intensive manufacturing society and again as we transitioned our economy away from manufacturing work to office work, the roles changed again.
We shouldn't be expecting societal roles to revert back to an earlier era where the economy functioned in a very different manner. This board loves to talk about their college econ 101, yet fails to grasp the simple economic drivers that determine how and why the household works.
I don't know what the future holds, but I believe that economics will drive the roles we play far more than the boring rhetoric of "I think men should do this and women should do this". If it's a viable strategy to leave a wife at home and be a 1 income household (or man at home), then success will breed imitation and the paradigm will shift back. That does not seem likely as people are finding ways to increasingly shift the household burden onto new service sectors of the economy and by freeing up the female to work, increasing net house income. This has been outcompeting the old single-income model and is moving us further in the dual income direction as what was once an advantage is becoming the norm and the old model is becoming a disadvantage.
