I was like that when I first went into University.

"Don't tell me you are someone who will put in your best effort. Effort is meaningless without results. Be someone who will deliver the best result. Hard work that doesn't result in success isn't commendable, it's wasted time. So don't waste my time."
I took those words to heart. I applied them, because effort is important, but there are too many people who use "effort" as a bailout.

Only recently have I gained insight into how my own emotionally deprived childhood lead to me being the wreck of a man I am today. Far from being a man child the actual problem is that I'm completely disconnected from my "inner-child" because his primordial experience of love and connection with other people was brutally severed. Music lessons and learning a second language can keep kids sharp and give them very useful life tools. I was never afforded either of those and I feel I missed out in a major way having to catch up on things like that as an adult.
