When US troops first went into the mainland, a lot of the soldiers would turn their backs on our troops. It turns out that this was actually a sign of respect, because they felt that they were not worthy enough to gaze upon the people who had just beaten them. It was a Japanese cultural thing, and points to why there weren't terrorist attacks carried out by the Japs after the war.
